A stunning and rare 16th century carved Panel, originally part of a coffer or chest front.
Deeply carved depicting the last supper , Eucharist in the manor L. De Vinci's.
Interestingly and rare the panel has an inscription around the top , as well as having the figures speaking, not as in the Bible, approx. translation being.... My heart has greatly longed to eat this Paschal
lamb with you. Very greatly. Is it in stock?.
Early images of "The last Supper" have a Lamb , as on this panel, but from the Renaissance Christ is usually depicted with Bread.
Dutch, circa 1560-80.
It is always interesting that art of the period tell the Biblical Stories in a contempory setting Mannerists Style, although the furniture here has a distinct earlier Gothic style .
