   PAIR 28 / 29. M.SWAN. ALTON SCHOOL. £2950
As can be seen in the samplers of E.Holloway & H.Stead it was normal for girls to sign there first sampler with just the her initial, one wonders why M.Swan was required to complete two almost identical damask darns , perhaps one just didn\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t meet the required standard .
Alton School was situated in the second oldest Quaker house in the world having been built in 1672,and was where 40 boys and 20 girls were taught to read, write and cast accounts.
28.dated 1811; 9 1/4 x 8 3/4 inches 23.5 x 22.5 cm. 29. undated, 9 1/2 inches square, 24 cm;
