LUCY GURR, COWBEECH 1881 |
£68 |
Many a sampler takes us on a journey, few longer than that our Lucy undertook.
Born in Isfield, Sussex in 1871 to Ruth (nee king) and Henry Gurr an engine driver on the London , Brighton and South Coast Railway. It is unclear why she attended School in Cowbeech, possibly convenient for his job that year. We do have her moving regularly, Ringmer, Maidstone and Tonbridge and in 1886 at the age of only 15 she married William Chambers in Malling. Interestingly although born Lucy she preferred the name Alice.
At the age of 40 her she moved to America with her husband William a Salesman living first in Philadelphia ward 24, and later East Lansdown Delaware Pennsylvania . The relocation was not a success or because of health as they moved back to England two years later where William died. Lucy dying 10 years later in Sept. 1852.
