ELIZABETH KIRK 1789 LINCOLN

£SOLD

  ELIZABETH KIRK 1789 LINCOLN £SOLD
ELIZABETH KIRK 1789 LINCOLN.
Worked in the 9th Year of her age, Lincoln. Above this inscription there are several religious verses and below in a panel with the words Long Live the King and Queen, flanked by two crowns and coats of arms. Below a small red brick house, set in a field, is slightly dwarfed by the large vases of flowers either side. the border is composed of various naturalistic spot motifs. The varying scale in this sampler with the motifs bearing little relation to each other are not designed to form a coherent or realistic picture but rather an attractive demonstration of needlework.
The large size and form very unusual for its late 18th Century date.
Provenance The Swamethan Collection. Illustrated Samplers by Susan Mayor & Diana Fowle plate 16
