IMPORTANT COLESHILL FLAGON by Thomas Slade dated.1819. £950
IMPORTANT COLESHILL GREEN
FLAGON d.1819.
Inscribed to one side JOHN REEVES BOVIENDON GREEN 1819, on the other Made by THOMAS SLADE COLESHILL May 17th 1819.
The Sldes are recorded as potters at Coleshill, The first potter one William Slade taking over the pottery from John Robinson in the 18th Century. by 1851 there were 21 potters in the area the largest being Sarah Slade who employed 5 labourers. Michael Farley & Barbara Hurman, have written a wonderful paper on Buckingham Pots, Potters and Potteries from 1200-1910.
They record a James Slade working at Coleshill (Amersham) who was our Thomas's father as well as his brother Joseph. Our Thomas born 1781-(1860) married Lucy Hawkins on Oct 17th 1805 in Amersham they had one child Lucy in 1819-(1891) the year of our pot. A number of the census records show he was not a full time potter but a labour, but from this a competent potter. Having a little problem over John Reeves it is possible that he to was born in 1819 in nearby Worminghall. It would be wonderful if the Johns father knew Thomas and they were commemorating the birth of their children together with this pot !.
