In 1812 Napoleon was defeated in Russia with a loss of over 500,000 men. The startling news reaching England with joyous outburst in favour of all things Russian. In this case a pearlware figure of a RUSSIAN HUSSAR. Based on an aquatint by Ackerman pub.1813 based on drawings by A.Orlovski.
The Hussars were especially chosen for their looks, size as well as military skills as the hand picked bodyguard of the Tzar of Russia.
Large Staffordshire figure, decorated in over glaze enamel colours.
Height 10 1/2 inches 26.5 cm.
Condition. Rest.right leg & reins. some touching up of enamel colours in particular the blue. |
